Chef-owner Andrew Huang brings a personal approach to Japanese dining at MUI Supper Club in North Bethesda, Maryland. At Pike & Rose, he is combining the food he has spent more than two decades working on with the kind of social atmosphere that makes people want to stay.

His vision for MUI brings a little Miami energy to the DMV: a reason to dress up, gather friends and enjoy an evening with good food at its center. Live music and performances on weekends carry that atmosphere beyond the table.

Huang's background gives the restaurant its culinary foundation. Originally from Taiwan, he developed his hospitality experience in Japan before building a career in American kitchens, including serving as head chef at Uchiko Houston. His experience connects Japanese traditions with the openness to new flavors that has become part of contemporary Japanese dining.

Before MUI, Huang served as executive chef at Michelin-starred Kōsen in Tampa, Florida. The Michelin Guide specifically recognizes his leadership of the restaurant's omakase, praising the precision of his cooking and describing sushi rooted in traditional preparations. That experience now informs his work as both chef and owner at MUI.

At MUI, guests can choose how they want the evening to unfold. The menu includes robata, raw preparations and plates for sharing. Lobster uni pasta combines lobster and uni with lobster dashi cream, while miso-glazed black cod comes with corn and peas. For guests seeking a closer connection to the cooking, the six-seat omakase counter offers an intimate, chef-guided experience.

Around that culinary focus, MUI creates space for a more social night out. Friends can gather over shared dishes, couples can settle in for dinner and cocktails, and weekend guests can enjoy live music and performances as part of the evening. The ambition is to bring more of Miami's supper-club spirit to the DMV, with a kitchen that gives people as much reason to return as the atmosphere.

For Huang, MUI is a personal chapter: a restaurant where his role extends from leading the kitchen to shaping the business as an owner. For guests, it is an invitation to make the most of a night out.
